The aim of this piece was to research into concept design. I chose an extract from the novel ‘Price of Thorns’ by Mark Lawrence in which a glass tree is described to use as inspiration. I wanted to look at how art can be created from written word and how film and theatre set designers need to take practicality and aesthetic into account when creating. In the novel the main character happens upon a large glass tree that appears to be made from shattered pieces of glass. He pushes the tree over, breaking it back into the shatters it was originally created from. To keep in mind the idea of creating a set for bringing the novel to life I wanted to have a practice element to the breaking of the tree. In my design the tree would be built like a jigsaw; it could be taken apart and put back together without too much difficulty. The tree in the novel is used as a symbol of power and luxury. To incorporate this into the design I wanted to add as much intricacy as possible into the build. This did not show as much as I would have liked in the final product due to the limited material available.
