This piece is inspired by the ocean and paintings I have created. These paintings involve texture and resin and I wanted to see if I could use fabric and enhance it to create a cohesive costume for an ocean queen.
I started with a design based on the paintings I create, aware that the resin will change the design during the process.
I experimented with creating shards of resin inlaid with shells, beads, iridescent paints and more.
The first shards (bottom left) did not set properly and were too crowded with colour. This showed me what to put in the shards and how to distribute it (middle column). I had little control over the flow of the resin around the shells. This gave a more natural look of flowing water to the pieces, though some were shaped awkwardly to the form of the body.
I attached the shards to the dress and noticed on their own they did not flow into the dress enough, so I placed pearl beads around to blend the resin in with the fabric better.
